Voluntary medical insurance gives you additional medical cover beyond the compulsory insurance used for Bulgarian visas and residence permits. It is a separate product: the scope of cover, limits, exclusions and availability are set by the chosen insurance programme.
Important: voluntary medical insurance does not replace compulsory medical insurance where a Bulgarian visa or residence permit requires it. It is additional cover, selected according to your needs and the insurer’s terms.
Who may need voluntary medical insurance?
- foreigners who live in Bulgaria and want medical cover beyond the compulsory policy;
- families looking for additional medical protection;
- people who work or spend substantial time in Bulgaria and want to consider a broader medical insurance programme.
How voluntary medical insurance works
There is no single “voluntary medical insurance” product for everyone. Before issuing a policy, we compare the available programme with your situation and explain the applicable terms. The insurer’s policy wording determines what is covered, where treatment is available, the limits, exclusions and any conditions that apply.
Do not buy a policy based only on a short marketing description. Read the terms for the exact programme you are considering.
Currently available through EUROMEDINS
We currently arrange voluntary medical insurance with UNIQA Life. The product line is developing, and additional programmes and documents will be added as they become available.
See the currently published policy documents on our Insurance Documents page.
